Happy Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina!

The citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina were 23 years ago opted for an independent homeland. From then on March 1 is celebrated as Independence Day, and this date is considered one of the most important dates in modern history of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A referendum on independence was held in 1992.

The referendum question was: "Are you for a sovereign and independent Bosnia and Herzegovina, a state of equal citizens, peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina - Muslims, Serbs, Croats and members of other peoples who live in it?"

Then 64 percent of the citizens said they wanted to live in the "sovereign and independent Bosnia and Herzegovina, the state of equal citizens, peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina - Muslims, Serbs, Croats and members of other peoples who live in it".

Referendum was approached a total of 2,073,568 voters which was a turnout of 63.6 percent. Of the total turnout to vote them 99.7 per cent voted for independence, and 0.3 percent against that decision. Results of the referendum are accepted 6 March 1992 in the Parliament of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Parliament on 28 February 1995 ruled that March 1 is celebrated as Independence Day of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The European Economic Community has recognized this day, and the command to proclaim the law on March 1, declares the date of independence of Bosnia and Herzegovina, public holiday signed by the President of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Alija Izetbegovic, 6 March 1995.

Previously, the law on 1st March, passed by the Parliament RBH, 28 February 1995. However, under this act, today is Independence Day celebrated in only one part of the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the Federation.
